Sought after for her insightful interpretations and dynamic presence, New Zealand-born conductor Gemma New is currently Music Director for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Ontario, Canada and Resident Conductor for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Starting in the 2019-20 season, New has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor, Dolores G. & Lawrence S. Barzune, M.D. Chair of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2018-19 Season, New enjoys guest engagements with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, CMI Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, and Santa Fe Pro Musica, as well as the Philharmonic Orchestras of Calgary, Louisiana, New York, and Rochester, the Symphony Orchestras of Charlotte, Detroit, Drummondville, Jacksonville, San Diego, Toronto, Tucson, and Winnipeg, the Florida Orchestra and the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester in Germany. In the summer of 2018 Ms. New made her debut with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and returned to the Grant Park Music Festival, while also serving as a Conducting Fellow at Tanglewood Music Center.
In recent seasons, Ms. New’s guest conducting has taken her internationally with orchestras such as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Helsingborgs Symfoniorkester, Malmö Symfoniorkester, Filharmonia Szczecin, and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne in Europe, the Albany, Atlanta, Berkeley, Long Beach, Miami, New Jersey, North Carolina, Omaha, San Diego and Toledo Symphony Orchestras in North America, as well as the Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony and Opus Orchestra in New Zealand.
Ms. New’s work as Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic has been committed to deepening the artistic level of the orchestra and expanding its reach into the community. She recently launched the HPO’s first Intimate and Immersive (I & I) concert series, creating a „closer-to-the-music“ atmosphere by combining treasures of the orchestra canon and contemporary music, electronic indie music, lighting and visual art installations. The 2018-19 HPO MainStage and I & I series present wide-ranging repertoire including works by core orchestral masters such as Beethoven and Mahler, and extending through some of today's most exciting living composers such as Zosha di Castri, José Evangelista, Salina Fisher and Kevin Lau.
As Resident Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony, Ms. New will open the 2018-19 subscription season with Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and return to the podium for a second subscription week later in the season to lead a program featuring works by T. Adès, W.A. Mozart, and R. Strauss. Ms. New also continues her tenure as Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, now in it’s 49th season nurturing over 100 of St. Louis’ finest young musicians.
A former Dudamel Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ms. New has led youth, school and community programs with the LA Phil, and assisted Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen and other guest conductors. Additional significant experiences include a David A. Karetsky Conducting Fellowship at the American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival and an Ansbacher Fellowship during which she was selected by members of the Vienna Philharmonic to take up residence at the Salzburg Music Festival. Ms. New has also resided in Leipzig, Germany as a Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Fellow, where she studied Mendelssohn’s music with Kurt Masur and led the Leipziger Symphonieorchester in the historic Lindensaal of Markkleeberg. She has also served as Associate Conductor of the New Jersey Symphony.
Holding a strong interest in contemporary music, Ms. New made her Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 2013 when she led works by John Adams and Andrew Norman on the American Soundscapes series. In 2010 she founded the Lunar Ensemble, a nine-member contemporary music ensemble that ran for six seasons, premiered over 30 works, and toured around the USA. In 2017, Ms. New received a Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award, in support of her operatic pursuits. Ms. New has conducted several contemporary operas, and worked on the conducting staff for operas by Mozart, Verdi and Ravel. With the LA Phil, she has assisted for semi-staged productions of Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. In the 2016-17 season, she led Jean-Pierre Arnaud’s arrangement of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde with the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio.
Ms. New holds a Masters of Music degree in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, where she studied with Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar. She graduated from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand with a Bachelor of Music (Honors) in violin performance.
