Young Artists' Concerto Competition 2016 Winner
Evan Tsai, an 8th grade student from LSU Lab School, began his musical training on piano and cello since 4 years old with his mom, Yung-Chiao Wei (Professor of Double Bass at LSU). He was the first place winner on cello on the Louisiana Music Teachers Association String Rally on 2011, 2012, 2013 and won the first place on piano on 2011 and 2013. Evan switched to the bass in 2015 because he thinks the bass is more fun than the cello. After three months of playing bass, he won the first prize of the 2016 Louisiana Bass Fest Young Bassist Competition and performed the Paganini Moses Fantasy in the LSU School of Music Recital Hall. He is assistant principal bassist of the Louisiana Youth Orchestra, plays the saxophone in the LSU Lab School band, member of the National Junior Honor Society, and is also on the school swimming team. He studies piano with Christine Lien and bass with Yung-Chiao Wei and Ivan Smentankin.
