Handel's Messiah
Summary
One of the most popular Holiday Season works, Handel’s Messiah was first performed in Dublin in 1742. Written as an oratorio, Messiah differs from an opera because it is a religious story without sets or costumes. The most famous part of the work is the Hallelujah Chorus, excerpts of which have been used in countless movies and television programs. It is tradition to stand during the playing of the Hallelujah Chorus because legend has it that when he first heard the piece, King George II was moved to stand and people followed suit behind him.
