Music
Hindemith: Mathis der Maler Symphony
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto
Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
Summary
Mendelssohn’s violin concerto was his last major composition and took him five years to perform. Joseph Meyer will perform this piece, one of the most famous in the solo violin repertoire. Meyer, the concertmaster for the LPO, has been called a “standout player” by the San Francisco Classical Voice. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was written as a memorial to his friend, the artist Victor Hartmann. Each of the musical portraits in the piece is based on paintings by Hartmann.
